Launched in 2025, Speaking of Research is the first official podcast from the SCDTP, and it’s already making waves. This brand-new series offers a platform for doctoral researchers to share not just what they’re working on, but why it matters, and who stands to benefit. It’s a rare and valuable opportunity to hear directly from those at the cutting edge of academic inquiry, speaking with honesty, clarity, and passion.

Series One was recorded in a unique setting: the annual SCDTP conference at Cumberland Lodge in April 2025. This beautiful and historic venue provided the backdrop for a series of thoughtful, dynamic conversations between researchers and our senior producer, Catherine McDonald. The result is a rich tapestry of stories that highlight the real-world significance of doctoral research across a wide range of disciplines.

Each episode dives into a different project, exploring not only the topic and methods but also the motivations behind the research, the communities or sectors it aims to support, and the change these researchers hope to inspire. Whether it’s tackling pressing social issues, exploring cultural narratives, or developing innovative policy ideas, the voices featured in Speaking of Research demonstrate the power of academic work to create impact beyond the university.

What sets this podcast apart is its ability to humanise the research process. Listeners don’t just learn about findings or data, they gain insight into the people behind the research: their journeys, challenges, and hopes. It’s an inspiring reminder that impactful research is being carried out every day by passionate individuals determined to make a difference.

If you’re interested in the future of research, curious about how academic work translates into real-world change, or simply love hearing compelling ideas brought to life through conversation, Speaking of Research is well worth adding to your playlist.

Research Podcasts offer podcast production and training for researchers and academics. If you have an idea, we can make it a reality.
