Podcast of the Month: A City That Works – Shaping the Future of London

This month’s featured podcast is A City That Works, a new series from The Finsbury Institute at City St George’s, University of London.

Hosted by Professor Diana Beech, Director of the Finsbury Institute, the podcast brings together academics, policymakers, and industry practitioners to look at how the City of London can adapt to ongoing economic uncertainty, technological change, and social transformation.

Rather than leaving research in a report, the series focuses on how evidence-based thinking can inform public policy and offer practical solutions to keep commercial hubs competitive, fair, and resilient.

The first episodes

A City That Works has launched with two episodes exploring the position and future of the Square Mile:

1. A Global City

Diana is joined by Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein (President of City St George’s) and Professor Michael Mainelli (former Lord Mayor of London). The discussion covers what defines a global city today, how to protect the rule of law, and why universities need to be permeable hubs working alongside businesses rather than isolated institutions.

2. A Finance City

This episode considers London’s standing as an international financial centre. Featuring Professor Keith Pilbeam (City St George’s) and Kirsty Rutter (Director of Fintech Investment at Lloyds Banking Group), the conversation addresses the post-Brexit landscape, the challenge of scaling fintech companies in the UK, and how AI is changing modern banking.

Why A City That Works is worth a listen

The podcast provides a grounded look at the relationship between research and real-world impact. While the discussions centre on London, the core themes – such as innovation, governance, and the race for talent – apply to cities globally, making it a useful resource for researchers and policymakers alike.

Generously funded by the School of Policy and Global Affairs at City St George’s, you can listen to episodes on all major podcasting platforms:
